Accelerated Reader

Accelerated Reader

Accelerated Reader (AR) is a reading recall and comprehension program created by Renaissance Learning, Inc. After reading a book from the AR Reading list, the student goes to the computer and takes a multiple-choice comprehension test on the book's content. Tests may have 5, 10, or 20 items, depending on the length and difficulty of the book. The computer scores the test, awards the student points based on the results, and keeps a complete record. For a book valued at 10 AR points, such as Anna Sewell's Black Beauty, a student would receive 10 points for a score of 100 percent, 9 points for 90 percent, and so on. However, the student must score at least 60 percent on the test to earn any points at all.

You may now access (still from school only) every quiz Accelerated Reader has, currently 125,000, and the number is growing all the time. Additionally, with AR Enterprise, your child has access to Vocabulary Practice Quizzes that are specific to the book they read. If you are looking for AR books from home, you may search www.arbookfind.com by author, readability level, point value, or topic. Then you may place titles in their “online AR BookBag,” print it out to take to the library or book store.

Renaissance Home Connect improves the school-to-home connection by allowing parents and students to log in to a website and view the student’s reading and math practice and progress towards goals. Access to online results promotes discussion between parents and students, which motivates students and can make reading and math practice even more effective. In addition, parents can specify up to six email addresses to receive automatic updates in English or Spanish on their student’s math and reading progress.  Click HERE for more information.
